Azusa : Motel Safety Study Ordered

Share

A proposal to build a 31-unit motel, already rejected by the Planning Commission, faces further obstacles imposed by the City Council, which on Monday ordered more safety studies.

During a public hearing, residents complained that the proposed Econolodge motel on the southwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and Pasadena Avenue would create traffic and safety problems. After the hearing, which is to continue May 6, the council will decide whether to overturn the Planning Commission decision.

Roy Bruckner, the city’s director of community development, said the Planning Department also is concerned about the financial feasibility of the motel. Because the city’s nine motels have 40% to 50% occupancy rates, he said, several offer their units for long-term occupancy--essentially becoming substandard apartments.

Project representatives, however, said the proposed motel would have at least 65% occupancy because it is affiliated with the nationwide Econolodge chain.
