About 1,000 parents of Montebello Unified School District students this weekend are expected to attend the district’s first conference to help their children succeed in school.

The daylong conference Saturday at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park will emphasize better relationships between parents, children and their teachers. Workshops, which will be conducted in English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese, will cover such topics as self-esteem, self-motivation and gang and drug activity. George A. Gonzalez, professor of education at the University of Texas in Edinburg, Tex., is the keynote speaker.

Maria Elena Alvarez, the district’s coordinator of community affairs, said that district officials have been planning the conference for a year. It will be paid for by dozens of local businesses and other community sponsors.

“We hope parents can be partners in education,” Alvarez said. “We know that when parents understand how to be supportive of their children’s education at home, their children can be successful.”

Free bus transportation to the conference will be offered to parents from their local schools. Child care will be provided for children ages 5 to 12. Lunch and a snack also will be provided.
