OXNARD : Emergency Homeless Shelter to Be Closed

Share

The arrival of warmer weather in Ventura County brings the official closing of the emergency warming shelter operated yearly by the county chapter of the American Red Cross.

The shelter, which housed hundreds of the area’s homeless during winter’s chilly nights, will close Thursday, Red Cross spokeswoman Lenore Gabel said.

The facility, located in the Oxnard Armory, is open yearly from mid-November until the end of March. After March 31, the Red Cross may keep the shelter open on nights when the weather is anticipated to be below 40 degrees or if rain with temperatures below 50 degrees is forecast.

Food for the homeless who take refuge at the shelter was donated by area restaurants and Food Share of Ventura County, and the Red Cross distributed sleeping bags, blankets and clothes.

Volunteers who staffed the emergency warming shelter in Oxnard last winter will be honored Thursday at a party held by Red Cross officials.

The party will be at Oxnard Baptist Church, 936 W. 5th St., from 6 to 8 p.m.
