Stockton Breaks Own Record for Most Assists in a Season
John Stockton broke his NBA single-season assist record with 11 assists during the Utah Jazz’s 130-103 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics Thursday night.
Stockton’s 10th assist, a handoff to Tony Brown for a layup with 9:16 left, gave him 1,135 this season, one more than the record he set last season. He was taken out of the game midway through the final quarter.
The victory kept the Jazz one game behind the San Antonio Spurs, who won at Houston, in the race for first place in the Midwest Division. Both teams have two games left.
Karl Malone led the Jazz with 28 points, including 20 in the first half as Utah took a 55-47 halftime lead. The Jazz took command at the start of the third quarter as Stockton scored eight of his 22 points in the burst that put the Jazz ahead, 80-51.
Eddie Johnson led Seattle with 17 points.
