The House That Got Stuck

The apartment complex on busy Olive Avenue in Burbank was just the kind of overnight development that causes traffic nightmares.

A four-unit apartment building in transit from Van Nuys to South-Central Los Angeles was stuck in the middle of Olive Avenue, near the entrance to Warner Bros. Studios for nearly six hours Friday morning, creating traffic havoc for thousands of commuters.

“At first I thought that maybe this was the studio moving a set, but then I realized, no, this is a house that has gotten stuck,” said Mark Miller, a Warner Bros. attorney.

The driver of the trailer carrying the building drove over a planter in the center of the roadway about 6:15 a.m., sinking the rig into the soft dirt, Burbank Police Sgt. Kris Walker said. “They had to jack it up and put something under it to give it some traction,” Walker said.

Officials with the firm transporting the building, H & H Housemovers in Altadena, could not be reached for comment.

The stall caused a backup for several miles along Barham Boulevard and Olive Avenue. At one time, cars were backed up as far as the Hollywood Freeway and the Cahuenga Pass, Walker said.
