Former S&L; President Pleads Guilty: Peter Bayard Cartmell, who headed the now-defunct Brookside Savings & Loan Assn., pleaded guilty to helping the former owners show a phony profit. Cartmell, 39, of Los Angeles is the fifth person to plead guilty in the related Brookside and Westwood S&L; fraud cases. Sentencing is scheduled July 1. Cartmell, president of Brookside Savings from 1984 until early 1986, admitted aiding and abetting former Brookside owners in a scheme to make it look as if the thrift had made a $3-million profit on a phony securities transaction.
