The judge in Howard Spira’s trial for attempted extortion ruled that his chief accuser, former New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, can be cross-examined about a 1974 fraud conviction.
U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton made that decision after the prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe, indicated that Steinbrenner would be called to the witness stand this morning.
Spira’s lawyer, David S. Greenfield, said he plans to question Steinbrenner about the different reasons, ranging from charity to extortion, he has given for paying Spira $40,000 in January of 1990.
