Oceanside police Tuesday searched for a 13-year-old Oceanside girl and the man who allegedly kidnaped her just one block from her home.

Witnesses told police that Maria Garcia was forced into a gray Ford Granada on Monday shortly before 4 p.m. by a man who has been identified as Jose Luis Gonzalez Ruis, 25, of Oceanside, and who is also known as “Licho,” Sgt. William Krunglevich said.

Garcia was taken from the 400 block of Brooks Street, which is one block from her home, Krunglevich said.

The car was later found in the 3900 block of Cameo Drive, near Tri-City Medical Center, an area that Gonzalez Ruis frequented, Krunglevich said.

Officials said they believe Garcia and Gonzalez Ruis knew each other but are handling the case as an abduction because witnesses said they saw the girl struggle to get away, and that she was put in the car against her will. Police know of no motive.

Krunglevich said both the suspect’s and the girl’s families were being questioned about the disappearance.

Garcia is described as a being 5 feet tall, weighing 110 pounds with waist-length brown hair and blue eyes and a small birthmark near her left eye. At the time she disappeared she was wearing a white sweat shirt and jeans.

Gonzalez Ruis is described as a being 5-foot-7 and weighing 130 pounds with black, shoulder-length hair and a mustache. He has a tattoo on his left arm and was wearing a white T-shirt and blue acid-washed jeans.
