Veteran Ojai City Council member James D. Loebl was elected to his third term as mayor by a unanimous vote of the council Tuesday.

He succeeds Mayor Nina Shelley after serving as deputy mayor the past year. Robert N. McKinney, a consultant for Casitas Municipal Water District, is the new deputy mayor.

Loebl, 63, an Ojai resident since 1965, has served on the council since 1968. He was mayor from 1972 through 1975 and again in 1986 to 1987.

An attorney who specializes in trust and probate with a Ventura law firm, he was also a deputy attorney general under Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown.

Loebl and other council members praised Shelley for doing “an outstanding job to represent the community against the attempt to make a dump out of Weldon Canyon.” He proposed a resolution, unanimously passed by the council, supporting Shelley’s continued opposition to the proposed landfill five miles south of Ojai.
