NATION IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Thornburgh Backed as Senate Candidate

The widow of Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.) said she would not run for his Senate seat, and Pennsylvania’s Republican chairman said the Bush Administration considers Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburgh to be the best candidate to fill the vacancy created by Heinz’s death in a plane crash April 4. Gov. Robert P. Casey, a Democrat, is expected to name an interim successor to serve until a special election Nov. 5. Thornburgh has not said whether he will run.
