BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Mariners Didn’t Stay Down After 0-6 Start

After an 0-6 start that began with a sweep at the hands of the Angels, Seattle got back to .500 by winning its next six in a row.

“We started out 0-6,” second baseman Harold Reynolds said. “They thought we were the Seahawks and the season was over. A week later, we’ve won six in a row and we’re the greatest thing. You can’t worry about it.”

Best known for never having a winning season, the Mariners entered their three-game series with the Angels coming off sweeps of Minnesota and Oakland.

The longest winning streak in club history--eight games--was in sight. Respect, perhaps, was a bit further away.

“We beat (Oakland pitcher Dave) Stewart, and the first thing everyone wants to know is, ‘Is anything wrong with Stewart?’ ” Manager Jim Lefebvre said.

Dave Winfield returned to the Angel lineup Monday after not starting the past six games because of a strained right hamstring. Despite having only one pinch-hit at-bat in nearly a week, he still ranked second in the American League in runs batted in before Monday’s game. Winfield’s 12 RBIs tied him with Detroit’s Cecil Fielder for second behind Oakland’s Dave Henderson, who had 15.
