COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Loses 2 to Pomona in Softball

Hours after Cal State Northridge’s softball team cracked the NCAA Division I rankings for the first time, the Matadors were swept by host Cal Poly Pomona, 4-3 and 1-0, in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday.

The Matadors (30-27), ranked 16th, outhit Pomona, 12-5, in the first game but stranded 14 runners. Steph Fleschaker’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning gave unranked Pomona (23-31) the victory. Danielle Wood and Kim Oakes each went three for four for the Matadors in the first game.

Heather Lindstrom (14-8) threw a two-hitter in the second game but gave up an unearned run in the first inning.

In another softball game:

Moorpark 3, Desert 2--Sheri Sisco (6-1) allowed just four hits in a nonconference game at Moorpark. Stevie Campbell went two for three, scored two runs and stole three bases for Moorpark (25-6).

BASEBALL

Ventura 16, Cuesta 8--The Pirates (24-12, 9-9) scored six runs in the first inning and seven runs in the fifth en route to the victory over Cuesta (25-13, 12-6) in a Western State Conference game at Ventura. Ventura had 21 hits.

Carlos Rios went four for five and drove in three runs for Ventura, and Kasha Clemens, Dan Madsen and Vine Reynoso each had three hits.

Kevin Zoll (1-0), who pitched five innings in relief, gave up two hits and did not walk a batter.

Moorpark 3, Oxnard 2--Moorpark (14-22, 6-12) scored the winning run on a bases-loaded error in the eighth inning of the WSC game. Mike Jenkins picked up the win for visiting Moorpark, striking out four and walking eight. Oxnard is tied with Glendale for fourth place in the conference standings at 11-7 and 19-17 overall.

Glendale 6, Santa Barbara 2--Santa Barbara’s four errors gave Glendale (11-7, 19-15) three unearned runs in a WSC game. Pitcher Rock DeTolve pitched a four-hitter and John McCoy homered in the third inning for Glendale.

L.A. City 5, Mission 3--Bert Bull hit a three-run home run for visiting L.A. City (16-14, 10-5) to saddle Nino Romo (3-7) with the loss in a Southern California Athletic Conference game. Mission fell to 17-18, 6-10 in conference play.
