Share

Capistrano Unified School District teachers overwhelmingly approved a new labor contract that gives them a 3% raise, union officials announced Thursday.

The members of the Capistrano Unified Education Assn. voted 792 to 22 Wednesday to approve the contract, officials said.

The contract, which is retroactive to July 1, is a one-year pact that expires June 30. It also calls for the district to continue paying 100% of the teachers’ health-insurance premiums and 90% of their dependents’ premiums.

Beginning teachers with a bachelor’s degree and a state teaching credential will receive $27,710 for this school year. The maximum annual salary of $54,114 will go to teachers with 24 or more years of experience, a master’s degree and additional college credits.

The terms of the contract will cost the district $1.7 million. Union president Ric Stephenson was out of town Thursday and could not be reached for comment.
