Share

DeWayne Odom, a two-sport standout at Mira Mesa High School, was one of 13 rookie free agents signed Thursday by the Chargers. Odom, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker out of Cal, was the City Eastern League’s Offensive Player of the Year as a Mira Mesa quarterback in 1985. He also lettered three years in basketball.

In addition to the other signings, the Chargers waived tackle Chris Pike, whom they had signed away from the Cleveland Browns as a Plan B free agent earlier in the year.

The other rookie free-agent signees are LeAndre Anderson (6-4, 265), a defensive end from Nebraska; Joaquin Barnett (6-1, 235), a linebacker from Hawaii; Geoff Cook (6-4, 257), a tight end from Santa Clara; Mike Davis (6-3, 255), a linebacker from North Texas State and Alema Fitisemanu (6-1, 235), a linebacker from Brigham Young.

Also signed were Darryl Jenkins (6-4, 290), a linebacker from Georgia Tech; Rich Kaufusi (6-4, 255), a defensive end from Brigham Young; Craig Lashley (6-3, 284), a defensive lineman who does not have a college affiliation; Kris McCall (6-0, 188), a cornerback from Idaho; Kim McCloud (6-0, 185), a cornerback from Hawaii; Stephan Weatherspoon (6-2, 245), a linebacker from Texas Tech; John Wyche (6-1, 207), a safety from Florida State.

SOFTBALL

Unranked Cal State San Bernardino defeated visiting UC San Diego, 1-0 and 9-6, to take a doubleheader from the eighth-ranked Division III Tritons.

Diana Moreno (7-7) was the tough-luck loser in the first game. She allowed six hits, walked none and struck out one. A double, fielder’s choice and sacrifice fly were her undoing in the bottom of the 10th.

Dana Chaiken and Melissa Mazanet had two hits and two RBIs for UCSD (16-19) in the second game, but San Bernardino scored five in the first and four in the third to put the game away.

BASEBALL

Jim Thomas, a right-handed pitcher, signed a letter of intent to play next year at Chapman College. Thomas, formerly of Mission Bay High, is 8-2 this season for San Diego Mesa College with a 3.45 earned run average.

A Western Athletic Conference doubleheader between San Diego State and Brigham Young was snowed out in Provo, Utah. The games have been rescheduled for this weekend.
