After four seasons and 39 matches, Newport Harbor finally had its Sunset League boys’ volleyball victory streak broken.

It was hard to imagine anyone stopping Newport Harbor, but Fountain Valley proved it could be done. The defending Southern Section champion Sailors were led by All-Southern Section setter Tom Brunnell and outside hitter Bill Yardley, who went on to play at USC.

Fountain Valley lost the first two games but came back to defeat the visiting Sailors, 9-15, 13-15, 15-6, 15-11, 15-5.

Twins, as in wins: Twin sisters Karen and Dawn Robertson had El Toro’s softball team in first place in the South Coast League with an 8-0 record.

The two were battery mates and a potent combination, helping El Toro to a 16-5 record. Dawn, who pitched, had a 10-2 record with 128 strikeouts and an 0.33 earned-run average. She pitched three no-hitters.

Karen was the catcher and batted .300 as El Toro’s cleanup hitter. Both of Dawn’s losses came when Karen was sidelined after shoulder surgery.

Let them all talk: Mission Viejo’s Lisa Fager was the county’s best in the triple jump. She had set the county record at 39 feet 11 1/2 inches as a junior in 1989.

And the record stood, although at the 1990 Orange County girls’ track and field championships Fager jumped 40-10. However, the wind was measured at 2.08 meters per second at the meet--.08 over the standard set for records.

Fager said the wind “doesn’t diminish (the feat) at all. I know that (the lack of wind) wasn’t going to make it less than 40.” Said Mission Viejo Coach Fred Almond: “Just talking you create an .08.”
