Plant Closing to Mean Loss of About 290 Jobs
About 290 people will lose their jobs when Westinghouse Electric Corp. closes its Sylmar plant in a yearlong phase-out, according to company officials.
The copper laminating plant employs workers in jobs ranging from secretary to mechanic to accountant.
In a letter to Supervisor Ed Edelman this week, the firm asked for county assistance. The company said the company is consolidating its operations in South Carolina.
Only a handful of employees will be transferred.
Workers will be given 60-day notices, the letter said, and the first employees are scheduled to lose their jobs on June 7.
Company officials did not return telephone calls.
Edelman said he will ask at Tuesday’s board meeting that county departments be directed to work with the Private Industry Council to try to help find jobs for the unemployed workers at the factory.
