Downey Police Offer Pay Cut to Get Chief Fired
In a bid to shed themselves of their boss, Downey police offered Friday to give back next year’s pay raise if the City Council will fire the police chief, a union official said.
“The Downey Police Officer’s Association is putting their money where their mouths are,” said Sgt. Mike Hadley, president of the bargaining group.
The police union wants a 7.5% raise but is willing to forgo the $600,000 if Police Chief D. Clayton Mayes is fired, Hadley said. “The association is prepared to discuss a salary rebate to the city for a period not to exceed 12 months in exchange for the City Council’s agreement to remove from office the current chief of police,” the proposal said. Mayes was hired in December, 1989, after serving as a captain in the Los Angeles Police Department.
