La Jolla Parking

Regarding the letter by Kenneth King “Parking Woes” (April 7):

It is really unfortunate that some people belittle themselves by name-calling and discrediting the situation that received an excellent article in the March 24 issue of the Los Angeles Times (“Giving No Quarter”). The story was informative and helpful, and has helped make an unhappy situation in La Jolla much more tolerable.

First, I am not a scofflaw, as Mr. King states. I have never, nor would I ever, erase chalk marks made by well-meaning parking patrol officers. I do pay parking fees in garages when I have a parking garage available to park in. Since I live and work in La Jolla, I, along with thousands of others, have been the victim of an overzealous effort on the part of San Diego to prevent anyone from parking in La Jolla without receiving a parking ticket.

I personally am taking my time and posted bond money to fight parking tickets that were issued inaccurately. The story came from numerous individuals who live in La Jolla who have received tickets unjustly. The merchants report the same problem happening with shoppers. The presence of four parking enforcers in a five-block area, full-time, is excessive and creates unneighborly situations.
