17 Riders Hurt as Car Plows Into Bicyclists
A car spun out of control and plowed into a pack of racing bicyclists Saturday, hitting several and causing a massive pileup that injured at least 17 riders, authorities said.
“It hit the pack going sideways,” said cyclist Allen Pritchard, 19, of Myrtle Beach, S. C. “It was chaos.”
Up to 90 cyclists crashed, said Trooper W. D. Waters. Eighteen people, including the driver of the car, were treated for injuries. Four people taken to Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst underwent surgery.
Sherri L. Bennett, 19, of Cameron was charged with careless and reckless driving and improper vehicle equipment, Waters said. The car had faulty brakes and slick tires, he said.
The 16th annual Tour de Moore, a 109-mile race, was canceled after the pileup. The accident occurred on a two-lane highway about 50 miles southwest of Raleigh.
