A motorcyclist was killed, a U.S. Border Patrol agent injured and a third man arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in a chain-reaction crash early Sunday along Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The motorcyclist, a 33-year-old San Diego man, lost control of his cycle at 1:38 a.m. Sunday and crashed into the center divider along the highway just south of the Palomar Street overpass, officers said.

Moments later, as the rider and the motorcycle lay on the road, U.S. Border Patrol agent Raul Arriola, who was driving by, stopped to help, officers said. As Arriola tended to the motorcyclist, a third driver, Paul Stuhler, 23, of Chula Vista, struck the motorcycle, ran over the rider and hit Arriola, officers said.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, officers said. His name was not released Sunday pending notification of relatives, said deputies at the county medical examiner’s office.

Arriola was in fair condition Sunday at UC San Diego Medical Center, according to a nursing supervisor.

Stuhler, arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, remained at County Jail downtown Sunday evening on $10,000 bond, jail officials said.
