An Oxnard man who urged his companion to shoot a robbery target received the maximum sentence Monday in Ventura County Superior Court.

Judge Frederick A. Jones sentenced Ronald C. Apodaca, 25, to 10 years and eight months in prison for robbery and attempted second-degree murder.

Calling Apodaca a danger to society, Jones said Apodaca “must be incarcerated for as long as possible.”

According to court records, Apodaca and co-defendant Mario V. Banuelos jumped into a slow-moving car behind an Oxnard Boulevard bar last Jan. 17. They asked the driver, Michael Hunter, for drugs. When Hunter said he had none, Apodaca said “shoot him.”

After struggling with Banuelos for the gun, Hunter escaped from the car but was shot several times in the arm, leg and hip. Apodaca and Banuelos fled in another car but were stopped soon afterward. A jury convicted them April 1. Banuelos will be sentenced May 10.
