Woman Stabbed to Death in Apparent Burglary

A local attorney was stabbed to death, apparently by a burglar who broke into her home near Hancock Park, police said Tuesday.

The body of Panayota (Penny) Nanopoulos, 39, was found late Monday by friends concerned because they hadn’t heard from her since Sunday, Los Angeles Police Detective Dan Andrews said. When knocks to the front door of the home at 1111 S. Dunsmuir Ave. went unanswered, the friends looked through a bedroom window and saw her nude body on the floor. Nanopoulos had been stabbed numerous times. Andrews said an autopsy would determine if she was sexually assaulted.

The woman, who lived alone, apparently was attacked as she lay in bed, possibly reading a book. Several items appeared to be missing from the home, but Andrews declined to elaborate, saying only that the neighborhood just south of Hancock Park has been the target of burglars.
