COUNTYWIDE : Permit Waived for Nonprofit Groups

Share

Nonprofit organizations that want to operate food booths at local events do not have to pay the $42 fee for a county health inspection and permit, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.

On Dec. 5, former Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp ruled that such groups are required under health and safety codes to have their booths inspected.

Until Van de Kamp’s ruling, nonprofit organizations that sold food at street fairs and festivals were exempt from health inspection requirements.

After the ruling, several nonprofit organizations complained to supervisors that the inspection fee would make operating a food booth too costly.

County officials said the fee has never been collected from nonprofit organizations, so there is no way to tell how many free permits will be given.
