FLICKS FILM & VIDEO FILE : Guest Shots : Director Robert Young and actor Edward James Olmos will be guests at a screening Sunday.

Director Robert Young, a resident of Ojai, will be one of the special guests at the Ojai Film Society’s showing of “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” on Sunday.

Young will be joined by the film’s star, Edward James Olmos (“Stand and Deliver,” “Zoot Suit,” “Miami Vice”) and the Olmos family. Young and Olmos have worked on five productions together. Young’s other films include “One Trick Pony” and, more recently, “Dominick and Eugene” and “Triumph of the Spirit.”

“Ballad of Gregorio Cortez,” originally a PBS production, is based on a true ballad about a young Mexican man who, in 1901 in a fit of rage over the killing of his brother, fatally shot an American sheriff and then eluded a posse for two weeks.

After the show at the Ojai Playhouse, society members plan to complete the Cinco de Mayo festivities with a buffet dinner at Roger Keller’s restaurant, 331 E. Ojai Ave., at 7:30 p.m. If you’d like to join them, call 646-7266 for reservations.

The movie is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Ojai Playhouse, 145 E. Ojai Ave.

Wednesday is family film night at the Ray D. Prueter Library in Port Hueneme. This month’s double feature includes the animated version of Maurice Sendak’s “Pierre.” It’s the story of a boy who doesn’t care about anything at all--until he finds himself in a very precarious situation, that is. Singer Carole King narrates the story through song.

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The library is at 510 Park Ave. For information, call 486-5460.

For those armchair adventurers out there, Ventura College will present “Africa Camera Safari,” a look at the animals of the region through the eyes of filmmaker Clint Denn.

Denn visited the crocodiles of Murchison Falls, the hippos of Mzima Springs and the lions near Lake Manyara. He went down the Nile and up to Mt. Kilimanjaro. For information, call the community services office at 654-6459.
