Top-seeded Monica Seles beat Regina Rajchratova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-0, and second-seeded Steffi Graf of Germany topped Julie Halard of France, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Hamburg Open Thursday.

Seles next plays sixth-seeded Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, who beat Elena Brioukhovets of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 6-2.

Graf’s quarterfinal opponent will be fifth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia.

Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, seeded third, beat Anke Huber of Germany, 6-2, 6-3.

Defending champion Andres Gomez and clay-court star Sergi Bruguera were the latest seeded players to be ousted from the Villa de Madrid tournament.

A thigh injury forced the third-seeded Gomez, of Ecuador, to retire from his match with Jacco Eltingh of the Netherlands. Gomez lost the first set, 3-6, and won the second 7-5, but was losing, 1-3, in the third when he quit.

Javier Sanchez Vicario beat fellow Spaniard and second-seeded Bruguera, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, in a match troubled by winds that blew dirt over the Chamartin Club clay courts.

Bruguera, who came into the tournament off a victory over Boris Becker in the final of the Monte Carlo Open, complained that the match should have been suspended because of the wind.

“It was impossible to play like that,” Bruguera said.

Udo Riglewski of Germany came from behind to beat Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), and Lars Jonsson of Sweden defeated Dino Pescariu, 6-1, 6-4, in the rain-soaked BMW Open at Munich.

Pescariu, 17, a qualifier from Romania, eliminated John McEnroe in the previous round.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl battled from behind to within two games of advancing into the quarterfinals against Goran Prpic when rain halted their match with the score 3-6, 6-4, 4-1.
