Ernie Irvan won the pole for Sunday’s Winston 500 with a lap of 195.186 m.p.h. over the Talladega (Ala.) superspeedway’s 2.66-mile, high-banked track. The Daytona 500 winner’s fast lap was the only one faster than 195 m.p.h. Harry Gant was second fastest at 194.963, followed by Kyle Petty at 194.852.
