TENNIS ROUNDUP : Santoro, 18, Stops Masur as France Beats Australia
France’s chances looked bleak when Guy Forget was beaten, leaving things in the hands of 18-year-old Davis Cup rookie Fabrice Santoro.
But Santoro surprised Cup veteran Wally Masur, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, Sunday to give the French a 3-2 victory over Australia at Nimes, France.
Richard Fromberg beat weary Forget, 6-7 (7-2), 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 6-3, to even the match. Forget played singles Friday and a 4-hour 5-minute doubles match on Saturday, a total of 132 games.
That left it up to Santoro, who lost to Fromberg in straight sets Friday. Playing with cool confidence, he delivered passing shots and winning lobs against a net-rushing Masur.
Top-ranked Monica Seles saved two match points and forced second-ranked Steffi Graf into a third set before rain halted the final of the German Open women’s tennis tournament at Hamburg.
The match will resume today with Seles serving, and Graf leading, 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 2-1.
Top-seeded Richey Reneberg won his first pro title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over fourth-seeded Petr Korda of Czechoslovakia in the USTA men’s clay court championships at Tampa, Fla.
Jordi Arrese of Spain downed Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 6-2, 6-4, to win the Villa de Madrid tournament at Madrid, Spain.
Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden won his first pro title when Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina defaulted with because of a hamstring injury in the BMW Open at Munich. Gustafsson was leading, 3-6, 6-3, 4-3.
Cal Poly Pomona won its first women’s NCAA tennis championship, defeating UC Davis, 5-3, at the Gold River Racquet Club in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
The clincher was a three-set victory by the No. 3 doubles team of Diane Ewing and Cindi Laird.
