Ex-Basketball Star Pleads Innocent in Rape, Killings

A former Compton College basketball star pleaded innocent Tuesday to charges he killed two young women and raped and attempted to strangle a third.

Authorities linked Roy Z. Williams, 25, to the two murders when the third attempted murder and rape victim came forward after seeing a news broadcast about the arrest, prosecutors said.

Williams was first arrested in July, 1989, by San Diego police as a suspect in the slaying of Lina Aldridge, 19, a Compton College honor student whose body was found stuffed in the trunk of her car. Williams was held for a day, but then was released for lack of evidence.

Last month, Williams was linked to the 1988 rape and stabbing death of 19-year-old Trina Denise Young through DNA tests of body fluids found in her home. Williams was arrested after he failed to appear in an Ohio court on another case alleging he raped a Cleveland State student.
