Rick Mears raised his top speed in practice for the Indianapolis 500 to 226.569 m.p.h., more than a mile an hour faster than the official track record of 225.575. Official records must be set during time trials.
Emerson Fittipaldi, the record holder, ran at 224.551 m.p.h., but was only the sixth-fastest driver. Behind Mears were Michael Andretti at 225.994, defending champion Arie Luyendyk at 224.994, Mario Andretti at 224.983 and Gary Bettenhausen at 224.888.
