BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Ryan Tries to Become No-No Nolan
Nolan Ryan will take the mound against the Blue Jays at Toronto tonight, trying to become the second pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters. Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds did it in 1938.
“My back has been bothering me but things are getting better and if I don’t have another setback I should be ready,” Ryan said.
Alice Torre, wife of St. Louis Manager Joe Torre, had to have stitches in her head after she was struck by a bat in the second inning of the Cardinals’ game Tuesday night at Atlanta. The bat slipped out of Mike Heath’s hand on a swinging third strike and sailed into the seats. . . . Milwaukee Brewer reliever Edwin Nunez will need surgery to repair a ruptured disk in his back and will be out three to four months.
