Ivan Lendl wasn’t surprised when he was upset by Renzo Furlan, a 20-year-old qualifier from Italy, 7-5, 6-4, Wednesday in the second round of the German Open at Hamburg.

“I am still having trouble adjusting to clay,” Lendl said. “I tried to fight, but when you mis-hit every second ball, it’s not simple to motivate yourself.”

Furlan, 61st on the ATP computer rankings, played a patient game at the baseline, waiting for Lendl to make unforced errors. Furlan got off to a 3-0 lead and coasted through the first set.
