BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Joyner Will Wait and See on Free Agency

Wally Joyner and his agent, Michael Watkins, say they will remain mum on the first baseman’s plans regarding free agency.

“There are new front-office people in new positions and we want to let the season play out and see what happens,” Watkins said, referring to Dan O’Brien replacing Mike Port as general manager.

“Just because Wally can be a free agent doesn’t mean he’s going to leave the Angels,” Watkins added. “The whole thing needs to be let go for a while.”

In recording a station-identification message for KMPC last week, Joyner said the tape wasn’t to be used after Oct. 25, the approximate date he could file for free agency. Joyner later said he made the remarks jokingly, but he acknowledged that becoming a free agent remains a possibility.

O’Brien said he expects no change in Joyner’s status before the end of the season. “I’ve got other things to get settled first and then I can start thinking about that,” O’Brien said.

His priorities, he said, are planning for the June draft, player development and scouting matters. He also said he has considered bringing in an assistant but hasn’t given it serious thought.

Several general managers have called him and offered to take players off his hands, but O’Brien won’t make any hasty moves. “I haven’t even got my pictures hung in my office yet,” he said.

Bert Blyleven, who had rotator cuff surgery on April 16, has begun therapy three times a week and will soon dispense with the sling protecting his right arm. . . . The Angels will not use Ticketron outlets after May 15. After that date, all remote and telephone sales will be with Ticketmaster.
