The Soviet army was reported attacking two Armenian-populated villages in Azerbaijan late Thursday after a 24-hour period of relative quiet in the troubled region, Armenian officials said.

“We have just now received news that Soviet troops and Azerbaijani police are attacking the villages of Manashit and Uzlu,” Bella Hatuchunian-Kozak, a spokeswoman at the Armenian Interior Ministry, said.

Soviet troops have raided six villages along the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the last 10 days to try to disarm Armenian bands battling Azerbaijani gunmen for control of the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

“There is a lot of military equipment around the villages, and the troops are firing on the villages,” Hatuchunian-Kozak said.
