Illegal Immigration

An important event happened in San Diego on May 4 near the international border: Public officials spoke out about the solutions to the illegal immigration and drug problems facing this country.

Harold Ezell, former western regional director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, spoke of a tamper-proof ID card as the solution. From San Francisco, George Warfel offered the latest technology on that card, one that is activated by one’s own thumbprint. Recently patented, this was the first press conference held on the card; but no one in San Diego was able to read about it.

Richard Knickerbocker discussed the recent California Supreme Court’s decision which denies in-state tuition to illegal aliens at our public colleges and universities, news that went unreported in most newspapers.

A city councilman from Culver City and a former one from Costa Mesa spoke about the severe negative impact of illegal immigrants on Los Angeles and Orange counties. One proposed that any agreement with Mexico be tied to border and population control.

It was a very informative and knowledgeable event, which San Diegans require to formulate their decisions on these issues. Around 175 people heard the speeches, but the problems will remain unless there is adequate coverage by the local press and TV stations.

CBS News from New York, U.S. News and World Report and others were there interviewing and filming. Sadly absent was a report by the Los Angeles Times.
