Gulf War Memo
Professors at UC San Diego are reported in your April 29 edition (“Battle Erupts at UCSD Over Gulf War Memo”) to be upset because they were told by the university administration that they should not cancel classes and alter curricula in order to vent their views on the Gulf War.
It appears to me that the professors are more concerned about their so-called academic freedoms than they are about their teaching duties.
They need to be reminded that they are hired to teach certain subjects and they are expected to put in a full day’s work for a full day’s pay.
Of course, the professors and their students have the right to express their views on any topic, but when it comes to controversial public issues, they might better do so on their own time, and avoid any disruption of their regular teaching assignments.
