NEWPORT BEACH : Fitness-Laundry Center Wins City OK

The city Planning Commission has approved a local developer’s plan to operate the city’s first laundromat-retail-fitness center.
The developer would set up the 3,254-square-foot operation in an existing office building in Newport Peninsula Center on Newport Boulevard.
The two-story facility would be broken into a 1,276-square-foot laundry room, 448-square-foot tanning area and 940-square-foot retail area on the first floor. The 590-square-foot fitness area upstairs would have only work-out equipment such as exercise bikes.
Developer Stephen Cloobeck said the location is perfect for students in the area looking for a place to wash their clothes. “They’re out there doing their laundry anyway, they might as well work out.”
The commission’s approval of the facility required a subsequent vote that allowed it to permit additional uses in specific planned areas. The vote is subject to approvals from the City Council and state Coastal Commission.
