The Assembly on Monday voted 55 to 14 to pass a bill sponsored by Assemblyman Robert C. Frazee (R-Carlsbad) to close the Aliso Creek rest stop on Interstate 5.

Frazee said he wants to close the rest stop, located 5 miles north of Oceanside, because of complaints that it is a magnet for crime and a gathering place for illegal aliens hoping to slip past the San Onofre border checkpoint a few miles north.

The assemblyman said Monday that he is moving the bill through the Legislature but is willing to delay it if officials from the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Transportation present a plan to more closely patrol the rest stop.
