After winning last week in Atlanta, Corey Pavin didn’t want to change a thing.

Pavin, the PGA Tour’s leading money-winner this season, stayed in the groove Thursday with a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead after one round of the Memorial Tournament at Dublin, Ohio.

“It was a carry-over of my philosophy from last week: be patient, don’t try to force anything, not get too carried away,” Pavin said. “It paid off.”

Pavin, who has won two tournaments this season, has a one-stroke lead over Dave Rummels. Tom Watson and Fuzzy Zoeller were next at 68.

Finishing his round in a light rain, Pavin put his lead in jeopardy when he hit into a sand trap guarding the 18th green, but his bunker shot got him to within 10 feet and he made the putt to save par.

“Probably the only really bad shot I played,” he said of an approach that drifted into the bunker on the right. “The one place on that hole you don’t want to be.”

Pavin said his level of play “is as good as it’s been in my career. I don’t go out trying to win the tournament. I go out trying to do the best I can.

“That way you keep it in perspective. You don’t get all carried away with winning. I won last week but there’s still room for improvement. If you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, you’re in trouble. What I’m trying to do is play mistake-free golf.”

Jack Nicklaus, host of the tournament, shot 71. Defending champion Greg Norman, in his first start after suffering what he called “burnout,” also had a 71.

Lenore Rittenhouse birdied the final two holes to finish with a six-under-par 66 and a share of the first-round lead with Lisa Walters in a $1.1 million LPGA tournament at Tallahassee, Fla.

Rittenhouse, who needed only 27 putts, moved into the tie with a three-foot birdie putt on No. 18. Walters had a shot at 65 but missed a similar putt.

Kristi Albers and Hall of Famer Joanne Carner are tied at 68.

George Archer and Don Bies teamed up for an 11-under-par 61 to take a two-stroke lead after one round in the $770,000 Legends of Golf at Austin, Tex.

Butch Baird and Gay Brewer followed with a 63.

In the Legendary Players division for players over 60, Roberto De Vicenzo and Charlie Sifford teamed for a 63 to lead Bob Toski and Mike Fetchick, last year’s winners, by two strokes.
