Vice President Quayle’s Qualifications

Share

Bethell thinks Dan Quayle is “doing OK” because:

He didn’t give a definite answer to questions put to him in an interview; he “easily ran out the clock with soothing speeches on issues too tedious to describe;” he’s young; “he has seemed remarkably uninterested in the whole project of governing;” “he was very bored in the House,” and “. . . he spoke rather more affectionately of the Paradise Valley golf course in Phoenix than he did about reducing the level of government regulation and taxation.” Is this a joke?

Leadership is a difficult quality to describe. I expect a leader to have ideas; to share them with me clearly so I can make an informed decision to follow or not; to be interested and interesting, and to be willing to put in some old-fashioned hard work to make his ideas a reality.

Quayle “doing OK”--I don’t think so.
