Marine Shot in Leg After Beach Fracas
A 24-year-old Marine from Camp Pendleton was shot and wounded Friday after a late-night brawl near the beach fire rings on Pacific Coast Highway.
Police said the victim and a group of friends engaged in a verbal confrontation with a group of about 15 to 20 youths near the beach restrooms at 10:18 p.m. The confrontation erupted into a brawl in which one 20-year-old Marine was injured when he was struck in the back with a wood board.
When the fight ended, police said, one teen-ager vowed to return and, a few minutes later, he approached the Marines’ group at their campfire. Police said the suspect--estimated to be about 17--fired four to six rounds into the group around the campfire, striking one man in the leg.
The gunman ran toward the Huntington Beach Pier and escaped. The victim was taken to Pacifica Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police said the incident is still under investigation and there have been no arrests. They did not release the identity of the victims.
