GOLF ROUNDUP : Perry, Seeking First Victory, Leads Pavin by Two

Kenny Perry shot a three-under-par 69 Saturday in the Memorial tournament at Dublin, Ohio, giving him a two-stroke lead over Corey Pavin with one round to play.

“This was a big day for me,” said Perry, 31, a non-winner in five years on tour. He completed three rounds at 202, 14 under par. “I knew it was important for me to go out and shoot a good score, not back off.”

Today, he will attempt to gain his first victory against a lineup of challengers that includes leading money-winner Pavin (67-204), U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin (65-207) and tournament host Jack Nicklaus (69-208).

Lee Trevino and Mike Hill teamed for seven birdies and an eagle to stretch their lead to five strokes in the $770,000 Legends of Golf. Their 63 gave them a 30-under 186 total over the par-72 Barton Creek course at Austin, Tex.

Two teams, Tommy Aaron-Jim Colbert and George Archer-Don Bies, were tied for second at 25-under 191.

Roberto De Vicenzo and Charlie Sifford lead the over-60 Legendary Players division at 194, 22 under par.

Pat Bradley, who has earned almost $3.5 million, more than any other LPGA player, took the third-round lead in the richest tournament in women’s golf.

Bradley shot a three-under-par 69 in the $1.1-million Centel Classic for a nine-under-par total of 207 at the Killearn Country Club layout at Tallahassee, Fla.

Judy Dickinson was one shot back after a 70 in the chase for a $165,000 winner’s check.
