From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An energetic bullfrog named Fun and Froglick leaped his way to victory Sunday in the 64th annual Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The amphibian jumped a total of 18 feet, 9 1/2 inches to capture the top honors and a $500 check for his owner, Denny Mataci of Santa Clara. The championships climaxed a four-day fair and jumping frog contest in the historic Gold Rush town made famous by Mark Twain in his 1865 story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Fun and Froglick failed to shatter the 5-year-old world frog jump record of 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches, set in 1986 by Rosie the Ribiter, whose owner, Lee Giudici, is Mataci’s father-in-law.
