San Diego State baseball coach Jim Dietz said Saturday’s Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship “rates as one of the most satisfying accomplishments of any team I’ve coached.”

The Aztecs (43-19), battered by Brigham Young, 19-1, in the first game of the tournament, advanced through the loser’s bracket, beat WAC champion and host team Hawaii, 6-4, to force a championship game, and scored five unearned runs in the top of the 10th inning to win its second consecutive title, 7-2. More importantly, SDSU earned an automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs, beginning play either Wednesday or Thursday. Hawaii is 48-16.

Brent Ferguson had a three-run double in the 10th in the decisive game. Derek Vinyard had three hits for the Aztecs, and Marcelino Garcia and Jason Ledford had an RBI apiece.
