The UCLA women’s track and field team, which had won four Pacific 10 Conference track and field championships in a row, could not make it five.
Oregon used superior depth and victories by Stephanie Hessell in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Even a UCLA sweep of the first three places in the discus throw, the conference meet’s final event, could not generate enough points to overcome the Ducks at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday.
Oregon scored 130 points to UCLA’s 112 1/2. Arizona State was third with 81 points followed by a fourth-place tie between Arizona and Stanford at 54, Washington 52, Washington State 39, California 35 and USC 31.
UCLA has been NCAA runners-up for the past three years.
Bruin freshman Dawn Dumble finished the meet by winning the women’s discus with a throw of 174 feet 1 inch, better than freshman teammate Melisa Weis at 171-1 and senior Tracie Millet, 168-1. Millet was the defending champion.
Dumble also had won the shotput on Saturday.
In the men’s team competition, Washington State used team balance and victories in the 1,500-meter run, 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter relay to win the league title with 135 2/3 points to Oregon’s 96.
Following in order were Cal 75 1/3, Arizona 75, Arizona State 72, Washington 70, UCLA 69, Stanford 30 and USC 27.
In individual events, UCLA’s Janeene Vickers won the 100-meter hurdles for the third consecutive year with a time of 13.39 seconds. She also placed second in the 100-meter with a mark of 11.56 and ran the second leg of UCLA’s 400-meter relay that placed third (44.99).
But Vickers false-started in the 400-meter hurdles and was disqualified after being the the three-time defending champion in that event.
USC’s Travis Hannah won the men’s 400-meter run with a time of 46.16 seconds. Fellow Trojan Quincy Watts was the favorite in the 400 meters but on Saturday suffered a strained hamstring and did not run in the final. USC also pulled out of the 1,600-meter relay.
In other finals on Sunday, USC’s Michelle DeCoux was second in the 400-meter hurdles with 59.20. UCLA’s Tonya Sedwick, who won the heptathlon earlier this week and the long jump on Saturday, on Sunday placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (13.82) and ran the third leg of UCLA’s 400-meter relay that was third.
USC’s Curtis Conway was fifth in both the 100 meters (10.47) and the 200 (20.94).
