Claremont McKenna College

* Claremont McKenna College conferred bachelor’s degrees on 228 graduates Sunday. U.S. Commerce Secretary Robert A. Mosbacher (Washington & Lee University, 1947) delivered the keynote address. An honorary degree was awarded to Stanton P. Welsh, vice president of college relations. Dennis Clark, an international relations major from Seattle, was the valedictorian. From Mosbacher’s prepared text:

“Too often, we accept the stereotype that commerce is only about making money and amassing property. It is that, but it is much more. It literally protects the highest values of mankind. There has never been a free people without a strong, free economy.”

Claremont Graduate School

* Claremont Graduate School conferred degrees on 232 graduates Saturday; 194 received master’s degrees and 38 got doctoral degrees. New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis (Harvard, 1948) delivered the keynote address. Honorary degrees were awarded to Lewis, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Harry A. Blackmun; Erwin N. Griswold, former U.S. solicitor general; federal judge Constance Baker Motley; Sol Wachtler, chief judge of the New York state Court of Appeals; Leonard W. Levy and Andrew W. Mellon, professors emeritus at the graduate school.

Pepperdine University

* Pepperdine University’s School of Law and Graduate School of Education and Psychology held commencement ceremonies Saturday. Malcolm M. Lucas (USC School of Law, 1953), chief justice of the California Supreme Court, spoke to 238 juris doctor degree candidates at the law school’s ceremonies. Jack A. Scott (Abilene Christian University, 1954), superintendent and president of Pasadena City College, delivered the keynote address. Graduate degrees were conferred on approximately 338 people. Honorary degrees were awarded at the graduate school to Bernice Bratter, executive director of the Senior Health and Peer Counseling Center in Santa Monica, and at the law school to U.S. Secretary of Education Samuel Skinner.

Pitzer College

* Pitzer College honored 188 graduates at its 27th annual commencement Sunday. Diane Mosbacher (Pitzer, 1971), regional medical chief for San Mateo County, delivered the keynote address.

Pomona College

* Pomona College conferred bachelor’s degrees on 365 graduates at its 98th annual commencement Sunday. David Alexander (Rhodes College, 1953), president of Pomona College, delivered the keynote address.

Scripps College

* Scripps College held its 61st annual commencement Sunday; 135 graduates received bachelor’s degrees. Bonnie Jo Hunt (University of Montana), president and founder of Artists of Indian America Inc., delivered the commencement address.

Harvey Mudd College

* Harvey Mudd College honored 129 graduates Sunday at its 33rd annual commencement. Ben J. Wattenberg (Hobart College, 1955), author and columnist, delivered the commencement address.

UCLA School of Law

* UCLA School of Law conferred 306 juris doctor degrees and nine master of laws degrees on graduates at its 40th commencement Sunday. Lourdes Baird (UCLA School of Law, 1976), the U.S. attorney for the central district of California, delivered the commencement address.

Southwestern University School of Law

* Southwestern University School of Law held its 76th commencement Sunday. Juris doctor degrees were awarded to 233 graduates. California Supreme Court Justice Joyce L. Kennard (USC Law Center, 1974), delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree.

Looking Ahead

* Cal State Northridge will hold its 33rd commencement over a six-day period begining Friday on campus. Open to the public.

* Cal State Dominguez Hills will hold its commencement ceremonies at 3 p.m. Friday in the Olympic Velodrome. Maureen DiMarco, California secretary for child development and education, will deliver the keynote address. Open to the public.

* University of Redlands will hold three commencements Saturday on campus, begining at 9 a.m. with the College of Arts and Science, 12:30 p.m. for the Johnston Center, and 5 p.m. for the Alfred North Whitehead Center. Open to the public.

* California Baptist College commencement exercises will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday on the front lawn of the college. Jess Moody, pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Church in Chatsworth, will speak. Open to the public.

* University of La Verne will feature Herbert Hogan, professor of history at La Verne, as the keynote speaker. Commencement ceremonies will begin at 12 p.m. Sunday for undergraduates and 4 p.m. for graduates, on campus. Open to the public.

* Whittier College will hold its 88th annual commencement at 5 p.m. Sunday, at the campus’ Harris Amphitheatre. Martin E. Marty, professor of history at the University of Chicago, will be the featured speaker. Open to the public.

* California Lutheran University’s commencement will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Thousand Oaks campus. John Slaughter, president of Occidental College, will be the keynote speaker. Open to the public.

* Loma Linda University will hold its 86th annual commencement at 9 a.m Sunday on campus. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. surgeon general, will deliver the keynote address. Open to the public.
