Altadena : Wildlife Way Station Backed
The Town Council voted 12 to 0 Tuesday to support a plan to create a wildlife way station.
Steven McNall, executive director of the nonprofit Pasadena Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told the council that he is seeking funds or a donation or five to 10 acres of land to set up a short-term care facility for wild animals and birds that move or stray from their natural habitats.
McNall said most of the 2,000 to 3,000 wild species the society handles annually die from stress or injury when mixed with domestic animals.
He estimated that each year the short-term refuge--which would be the first of its kind in Southern California--would house 8,000 to 10,000 native wild animals and birds from surrounding communities.
