Southern California’s first licensed chemical dependency hospital has received approval of the Long Beach Planning Commission to add a 5,800-square-foot addition and a new 19-car parking lot.

Redgate Memorial Hospital, at 1775 Chestnut Ave., was established in July, 1982, as a medical detoxification and rehabilitation service to help patients recover from drug and alcohol abuse. It uses a 12-step rehabilitation program for men and women age 18 or older.

The addition will include expanding existing kitchen and dining facilities, remodeling the administrative facilities and adding secured parking for employees. The facility has been used as a social service center since 1946.
