Beer-Tasting Event in Anaheim Could Cure What Ales You

Mark Scott, the brew master from Eureka, Wolfgang Puck’s acclaimed state-of-the-art brewery restaurant in Los Angeles, will lead a beer tasting Friday, June 7, at Mr. Stox, 1105 E. Katella Ave. in Anaheim. Scott will be joined by reps from Sierra Nevada, Samuel Adams and other American boutique breweries. The evening will feature dinner (to include a couple of Eureka’s special sausages) and two beers with each course, one American-brewed and a famous European counterpart for comparison. Ales, lagers, Pilseners, stouts and a dark beer are on the list. $60 includes tax and tip. (714) 634-2994.

Pascal Olhats will pop the corks of not one, not two, but five different Perrier Jouet champagnes on Wednesday, June 5, to celebrate the third anniversary of Pascal, his restaurant at 1000 Bristol St. in Newport Beach. He’ll be matching each of the bubblies with such dinner courses as crayfish salad with salmon mousse, fricassee of dover sole and scallops in champagne, roasted pheasant breast with raisin, foie gras and crispy leeks. Four Orange Countians will compete as finalists on Friday, May 31, in Tony Roma’s consumer recipe contest to select “the Best Homemade Barbecue Sauce in Southern California.” They are: Margaret Beckett of Los Alamitos, with her tropical tamarind barbecue sauce; Linda Keyes of Santa Ana with her Marco Polo sauce; Bruce Seldeen of Anaheim with his East Indies sauce, and William K. Smith of Westminster with his Texas sauce. Each will prepare his or her sauce from scratch, starting at noon at the Universal Studios Tony Roma’s in Universal City. There will be 10 contestants, from throughout the Southland; the judges will sample each sauce with some of Roma’s baby-back ribs. The grand prize is a five-day stay in Hawaii for two. Second prize is a weekend for two in San Francisco; third, a weekend for two in the Palm Springs area at La Quinta Golf and Tennis Resort.
