The Los Angeles Times said Thursday that its weekly World Report section will be published every Saturday in the English-language edition of Japan’s largest newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun.

The agreement with the Daily Yomiuri represents the first time a foreign newspaper will publish the World Report section, which covers international affairs, trends and cultures. The section will debut in Tokyo on Saturday with the May 21 special edition of World Report, “Power on the Pacific Rim.”

“The agreement represents an important step in the development of Pacific Rim journalism,” said Shelby Coffey III, editor and executive vice president of The Times. “We believe our World Report section will offer a unique perspective to Daily Yomiuri readers: a West Coast view of world events and issues, from the largest metropolitan daily in the United States.”

The deal is part of the Yomiuri’s vigorous campaign to expand its English-language edition.

“I consider World Report a very fine, quality weekly edition,” said Akira Saito, the Yomiuri’s manager of international affairs. “I’m sure a lot of people in Japan will be very interested to read it.”

Under the agreement, The Times will send copies of World Report’s pages to Japan every Monday by overnight courier.

The Daily Yomiuri has a circulation of about 56,000. Its parent, the Yomiuri, has a morning circulation of 9.5 million.
