HUNTINGTON BEACH : Piering Into Past Via a 1914 Time Capsule

Share

The contents of a 77-year-old time capsule retrieved from the now-demolished Municipal Pier will be unveiled at a public ceremony today.

The event is scheduled at 11:30 a.m. at the Waterfront Hilton at Huntington Beach, 21100 Pacific Coast Highway.

A copy of the Huntington Beach News and an as-yet-unidentified document were retrieved May 8 from the capsule. A third item had disintegrated, city spokesman Dennis Williams said.

The capsule was set in a 19-cubic-inch concrete cornerstone in 1914 and was removed from the pier Dec. 5. The cornerstone was displayed last month at the Huntington Center Mall, along with a photographic retrospective about the pier.

Dennis McGuire, the Orange County Public Library archivist who removed and restored the contents of the rusted capsule, will speak at today’s presentation. He will be joined by City Council members and other city and business officials.

Workers demolished the last remains of the old pier last week. Its replacement is scheduled to open next spring.
